Who I Am

I’m Derek Gowen, and I lead the work at Retroactive Books.

I’ve spent many years working with small businesses, including about ten years as a CPA assistant.

Today, I work as a full-charge bookkeeper and registered tax preparer, specializing in financial cleanup and reconciled reporting.

What I Focus On

Retroactive Books was built to do one thing well.

I help clean up financials that are behind, inconsistent, or no longer reliable, starting with actual bank and credit card activity and working back to clear, reconciled numbers. By keeping the scope narrow, I’m able to deliver work that’s accurate, consistent, and easy to trust for both business owners and CPAs.

How The Work Is Used

Most of the work I prepare is used by CPAs and tax professionals to complete tax filings without having to rebuild books in accounting software.

The goal is straightforward:

clear income and expense totals
reconciled back to the bank statements
presented in a clean, professional format

After Cleanup

For clients who want to maintain clarity after a cleanup, I offer Reconciled Monthly, a limited, ongoing service focused on monthly bank reconciliation and simple, informative reporting.

This option is available only after an initial cleanup and is intentionally not full-service bookkeeping.
